Job Description: Porter

WSFSSH is a community‐based organization whose mission is to provide safe, affordable housing with supportive services within a residential setting which enhances the independence and dignity of each person. WSFSSH develops, manages, and provides housing for low‐ income older persons, many of whom live with mental illness and/or have experienced homelessness.

Under the supervision of the Building Manager and Superintendent the Porter is responsible for maintaining a clean and safe environment. The Porter will perform a variety of housekeeping and maintenance duties within the building and on the grounds in a concentrated effort to provide healthy and well-maintained facilities. The Porter’s responsibilities include, but are not limited to:


  • Sweep and mop all floors, including basement and stairwells.
  • Clean all glass doors.
  • Clean all common restrooms.
  • Maintain clean and organized laundry rooms.
  • Collect and place garbage/recycling on curb on appropriate days.
  • Maintain clean and organized supply closets.
  • Clean and remove waste/recycling from office space and common areas.
  • Assist Superintendent with making-ready vacant apartments.
  • Dust and wax all common furniture.
  • Accept deliveries and ensure that all items are accounted for.
  • Strip, wax and buff floors as directed by Manager and Superintendent.
  • Remain mindful or property left unattended in common space and report issues to Manager and Superintendent.


  • Sweep and hose sidewalk and patio space in front and back of building.
  • Remove snow and ice from front sidewalk and spread salt.
  • Assure outdoor furniture is safe for resident use.
  • Assure grounds are hazard-free, particularly in major storm events.
  • Maintain active awareness of exterior space and report problems in a timely manner to Manager and Superintendent.


  • Work as a member of a team t to establish and maintain high level of care, respect, and communication with residents.
  • Work cooperatively with other staff members.
  • Actively communicate with Manager and Superintendent regarding any building needs or concerns, or potentially unhealthy tenant/staff behavior.
  • Implement emergency procedures, as necessary.
  • Assist with other duties, as directed.


  • At least 18 years of age.
  • Experience in housekeeping and general maintenance duties.
  • Emotionally, mentally, and physically able to perform job responsibilities.
  • Able to speak, read, and write English.
  • Ability to speak Spanish a plus.
  • Experience working in an “intensive use building” with persons with special needs is preferred.
  • Team-oriented outlook.
